11/11//12 Six Sentance Sunday

For those of you who might not know, Six Sentence Sunday is a blog hop where participating writers chose six sentences from either published novels or work-in-progress manuscripts, and post the sentences on their blog. It's a great way to network, add lots of books to your to-read pile, and to get some excellent feedback on writing samples. Plus, it's lots of fun.

I'm picking up where last week's SSS snippet left off. If you're new to the blog, you can read this scene in it's entirety (well, up to where this snippet ends) and get some context here

“I want to buy her.”
“You don’t have any clue what you’d be getting into.”
 “She can have da pig.”
The unexpectedness of Etna’s voice startles us. She leans against the door way, her arms crossed over her chest, the heat escaping out the open doorway turning her florid face an even brighter shade of red. “If she wants da pig, den she might as well have it, eh?”

Etna is Grace's Great-Aunt and co-owner of the farm. She's based on an imaginary character/disturbance my wild and, um, I'm going to go with bizarre, younger sisters created while bored. I decided to make Etna a Yooper (slang for someone who calls Michigan's Upper Peninsula home) because I happened to be in the U.P. visiting family the first time I learned about her. Although Etna is abrasive, blunt, and in general not a very nice person, she in no way reflects any of the Yoopers I've met over the years. When it comes to all groups of all around great people, Yoopers rank second only to farmers in my book. They're a wonderful bunch.

  1. I think it's great that she's going to get the pig, but how is she going to take care of it on her own? Great six!

  2. Is Etna trying to teach her a lesson? I hope she manages to look after the pig! I love the way you put across Etna's dialogue. Great stuff.

  6. Great 6, Jess! I love the characterization one gets from just that one line of Etna's.

  7. Great excerpt. Interestingly, because you consistently used a D for TH in Etna's dialogue, my mind took it a step further and had her saying "kin" for "can". Your writing is so clear and succinct, yet evocative. Great job :)

    1. Yoopers really are a great group of people. They also aren't well known outside of Michigan and Northern Wisconsin.

    1. You're not alone. I think there's a huge portion of the world who's never heard of Yoopers.

  17. I like the new character, Jess! Of course, when hearing the name Etna, my mind immediately wanders off to Edna from the Incredibles... Such a unique name and an interesting addition to the scene. :)
