Friday Fictioneers 7/6/12

My mother rolled her eyes and said the realtor saw me coming. My father just shook his head and muttered something about how he always knew I was crazy. My younger brother took one look at the photo of the small lot I’d purchased, with is scruffy grass, lack of trees, and crumbling building, and proceeded to laugh and laugh. I didn’t care what they thought. To me, that tiny piece of land represented freedom, solitude, and a brand new start, the very things I needed in order to put the past behind me.

  2. Dear Jess,

A perfect story about the perfect spot. Why do I feel like there is a lot of real life in that depiction? Perhaps it's just my life I'm projecting onto the picture you painted. Well done, either way.

    Aloha,

    Doug

    1. Not so much real life, as a real memory. A few months ago, I explored some ruins, a mid-west version of the ruins in the photo. I think I was drawing on the memory and emotions I felt that day. I'm glad you liked it.

  4. Your story made me smile when I read it as I'd been entranced by the title of your blog too - the piece wrote and the plot purchased just seemed so whimsical - really well done :-)

I'm on the list but for those who happen across, my offering is also here: http://womanontheedgeofreality.com/2012/07/06/reality-brought-forth/

    1. Thank you. Whimsical is one of my favorite words. For some reason it always conjures up thoughts of butterflies, pirates, and dragons.

  5. A real fixer upper. Love it! Sounds like someone who's going to make a home out of a hovel.

  7. The best of luck to him/her as s/he makes a better future. Nicely done.

I had issues posting a comment (this is my fifth try) as I did not have any of the sign-ins available. I've now modified my Blogger account (from showing personal details to professional), which is why I've tried to remove my previous post! I didn't want you to worry that 'this comment has been removed by the author'!

  9. You go girl! Sounds like she made this decision for a lot of valid reasons. Sometimes families can't understand that, but as readers we can, through your writing.

  11. Hello Jess,

Your narration is simple and flows freely. I like that.

There's always that moment in life when a person's pursuit of freedom is grossly misconstrued and criticized.

I can easily relate to this story.
    Nicely done.

  14. Hi Jess: Let them laugh...she knows what she wants. I do wonder however, why she needs to put the past behind her...a broken marriage? Jilted love affair? Domestic abuse? A million possibilities. I'm assuming it's a she..instead of a he. thanks for commenting on mine.
