I hope everybody had a great first week of September. Mine consisted of waging war on the stable spiders. The spiders are winning. We're trying to get the barn cleaned up for the therapeutic riding program we host each fall. Luckily I haven't seen many spiders (they give me the heebie jeebies) but they keep rebuilding their webs at an alarming rate.
I also joined the Gearing up to Get an Agent Blog hop. This seems like a great event and writers can either take part in the whole thing, or they can pick and choose the steps the wish to participate in.
This week's Six Sentence Sunday snippet picks up where last week's ended. To read the work of some truly phenomenal writers, you should check out the official list.
“A little help would be
appreciated.”
Still
doubled over with laughter, Luke reaches under the sow and scratches her belly.
The sow heaves a huge sigh, grins, and falls to the ground with a thud that
causes the entire nursery crate to shimmy and shake. The babies drop my skirt
and charge her, their little tails wag as each one grabs a teat. I watch the
feeding frenzy while covering my bowed legs with the battered remains of my
skirt. Each time the littlest one gets close to hullabaloo, one of its siblings
knocks it away.
Aww, what sweet scene. :) Love the pic, too!
ReplyDeleteThank you. The sweetness and innocence of this story never ceases to amaze me. It morphed into something completely different than what I first imagined.
DeleteWell, I don't think that's what she expected, but it worked. Nice six! :)
ReplyDeleteFarm kids are a resourceful lot :) Thank you.
DeleteAw, so cute, though poor little pig! Good six! :)
ReplyDeleteGood six! The excerpt pulled me right into the scene. And a great continuation from last week's excerpt!
ReplyDeleteTamworths!! sorry, I just love pigs.
ReplyDeleteI also love the practical way that Luke helped her. Terrific six.
I love pigs too! They fascinate me. I'm glad you liked it.
DeleteWhat a resourceful way for Luke to rescue her!
ReplyDeleteGreat snippet...enjoyed it!
ReplyDeleteThat's what I like to hear.
DeleteVery nice snippet. I love the tone of this piece.
ReplyDeleteSome fun in this one too. Your writing's very clear, I can easily picture every excerpt.
ReplyDeleteThat's good to know. Thank you!
DeleteAw, the poor little guy!
ReplyDeleteLife can be tough.
DeleteAw, the cuteness overwhelms! Great six.
ReplyDeleteI'm glad you liked it.
DeleteYou paint a perfect picture. Poor little one. Great six!
ReplyDeleteThank you. I'm so glad you liked it.
DeleteI see where this is going. I hope she's prepared for "motherhood"!
ReplyDeleteHaving raised more than one bottle baby (one of my mares was one), I can honestly say that it's the fastest way to discourage teen pregnancy. There comes a point where the babies become uncute.
DeleteVery cute!
ReplyDeleteThat's creative of him; quick thinking on Luke's part. And such a cute image!
ReplyDeleteThanks Karen! I'm glad you liked it.
DeleteThis story is wonderful Jess. I hope you find representation! It is such a unique story, and so sweet, it needs to be told :-)
ReplyDeleteOne observation: I really liked your use of "hullabaloo" rather than something more common such as 'frenzy' But, I think you need an article, "the" in front of it.
Probably just a typo. :-)
Thanks for pointing that out Teresa.
DeleteThere is such high density in your excerpts, yet so much ease in the narration. It speaks highly of both your writing as well as your editing skills. :)
ReplyDeleteAww. Thank you. Now if I could just figure out how to fill in the plot hole I found I'd be set. Thank you!
DeleteI really liked how you used 'hullabalo' in this snippet...it brings out more imagery for the reader. Good six!
ReplyDeleteI'm glad you like it. Hullabalo happens to be one of my favorite words. It's so fun to say:)
DeleteYour sixes are always so easily visualized! I love reading them each week. When do you think this story will be out? I have a reader in my house who would love to read the whole story as much as I want to.
ReplyDeleteHugs,
A
I'm starting to look for beta readers. Let me know if you're interested.
DeleteThis is a funny excerpt. Your protagonists are charming :) xoxo
ReplyDeleteI love how vividly you write!
ReplyDeleteSo slow getting to everyone's snippets this week and this one made me sniffle. Poor little runt. :( Good luck with the agent search!
ReplyDeleteYou've described this to perfect! We have piglets due Thursday - I'm so looking forward to a new batch. ;c) I adore your blog. It feels like home to me.
ReplyDelete*perfection ... ugh. What a word to screw up!
DeleteI'm so jealous. I miss piglets. When they're born be sure to give them a cuddle from me.
