I'm still posting from my recently released Georgian holiday story, Snowflakes & Beeswax, though I jumped a few paragraphs ahead of last week's snippet. Don't forget to check out the other very talented writers who are sharing samples of their amazing stories. For the first time in his life, Oliver was flummoxed by a door.
He stared at the cabin's door. How was he supposed to open it while carrying Madelyn? She wasn't a sack of flour he could brace against the wall, or a bucket of nails to be set on the ground.
Jack sat beside Oliver’s feet, his feathered tail sweeping through the snow while he stared up at Oliver, his eyes sparkling with canine amusement.
Great, Oliver thought, I love providing the dog with comic relief. He imagined that any minute now the medium sized black and white dog would gather up all of his canine friends and invite them over to watch the idiot human who couldn't figure out how to open a simple door.
The mental image caused his mouth to twitch.
It took some creative wiggling and more than a few curses, but Oliver finally managed to undo the latch.
Terrific snippet! I've been in Oliver's shoes -- I often wonder how much of an idiot the dog thinks I am when I do something stupid in the kitchen. LOL
ReplyDeleteYou know, dogs laugh a lot for a species that doesn't have opposible thumbs. I'm just sayin'.
ReplyDeleteThis is a different kind of obstacle for a hero to have, and I love it, Jess! :D

DeleteWhat a wonderful scene. I could picture both the dog's and Oliver's actions and reactions so well. Isn't that just like a dog to be amused by a human?
ReplyDeleteI know a few dogs who seem to think that humans were put on the earth just to entertain them. I'm glad you liked it, the dog is one of my favorite characters.

ReplyDeleteLove the dog, love the practical detail of how to open the door whilst carrying fair lady...great excerpt!
ReplyDeleteGood one Jess. Anyone with animals can so relate to that scene. I've had that happen trying to carry in a sleeping granddaughter, and I know when my pets are making fun. A realistic and cute scene!
ReplyDeleteHistory Sleuth's Milk Carton Murders
