So, did everyone make it through NaNoWriMo? I did,
though I’m not looking forward to the massive amount of editing I foresee in my
future.
Now back to this week’s SSS post. I picked up where
I left off a few weeks ago. If you’re new to my blog you can catch up by
visiting this post right here. You should also check out the official Six Sentence Sunday list.
There’s several very talented writers participating this week. You’ll enjoy
reading their contributions.
Etna lumbers over to the nursery
crate, and peers down at the piglet, who stares up at her. My nails dig little
crescent shaped gouges into my palms. There’s nothing I won’t do to help it, even
going toe to toe with my aunt.
She
adjusts her eye patch and her heads swivels to face me. I should meet her eye,
I want to, but no matter how hard I try, I can’t, the best I can do is staring
at a small tear in her jacket. She shuffles closer and my knees shake.
Thank you for taking the time to read my little
snippet. Any and all comments and criticisms are appreciated.
I can certainly feel the tension, Jess! Great 6!
ReplyDeleteWonderfully descriptive as always!
ReplyDeleteOh, Jess! This is a wonderful passage--so full of all sorts of emotions. Well done!
ReplyDeleteAnd congrats on finishing NaNo. I hear you on the editing. My WIP this year is...Let's just say I'm taking a vacation of few days so I have the energy to face the steaming pile of...stuff. ;)
That's exactly how I feel about my Nano right now. I can see glimmers of goodness in it, but man, bringing them to the surface is going to take some time and effort.
DeleteCongrats on finishing.
Ah so sweet, and honest! great six!
ReplyDeleteThank you :)
DeleteWhat fun! I think a lot of people, when they were kids, had at least one relative who made them shake in their shoes. My father's father was like that. He never did anything to anybody, but being quite tall and always have a really stern expression, we never knew what he *might* do!
ReplyDeleteGreat snippet here, as usual. I love that Grace is gearing herself up to meet whatever challenge Aunt Etna tosses at her. Good stuff.
You're absolutely correct. It's funny how now that I'm an adult I can't figure out why some people terrified me so much during my childhood.
DeleteGood evocation of tension. I've just followed you, BTW.
ReplyDeleteLots of detail in this snippet. Well done! Congrats on making it through NaNoWriMo!!
ReplyDeleteExcellent, Jess. Your words teem with imagery. I could see the little crescents, even feel them. And Grace is so believable, so relatable. Great job. I like that Grace is taking the runt! Great six :-)
ReplyDeleteHer aunt sounds formidable! Great six!
ReplyDeleteWow great description of her reaction to her aunt! You showed it instead of just telling us, good job!
ReplyDeleteOh, I hope she's able to keep that piglet. Such a cute pic, too. :)
ReplyDeleteI foresee some major character growth in Grace's future. Good stuff, Jess!
ReplyDeleteI love the contrasting emotions she's going through. And going toe to toe with a relative? Now, that's eye-catching. Well done, and glad you made through NaNoWriMo. I'd do it, except I'm the type of writer who has to craft the perfect first draft - don't think I could make the deadline.
ReplyDeleteI know exactly what you mean. The entire time I'm trying to blast out the first draft I keep thinking about what I have to correct. When I finally get around to rewriting it, my perfectionist self will come out.
DeleteLove love love, this is really good Jess. And hats off to you for finishing NaNoWriMo with 74k, leaving me behind in the dust with 56k. Very impressive! :)
ReplyDeleteYou finished and that's all that matters :) and don't be to impressed, I've read some of the pages and I wrote, and well, there's alot of work to be done.
DeleteSame here. I'm glad we made it. :)
DeleteAnother very tense six.
ReplyDeleteI like her frustration and anguish. Great job as always, Jess!
ReplyDeleteRyan
Sounds like this woman is quite a terror. Good six, Jess. :)
ReplyDeleteFascinated by this relationship with Etna. Excellent teaser.
