#WeWriWa Post Sunday May 18 2014-Rendezvous with Destiny Part 1

Wow, has it ever been a crazy spring! I don’t know about you, but I could really use about 6 more hours in each day … or maybe just some better time management methods. Anyway, after several weeks away, I’m finally back in the WeWriWa loop, this time with a brand new YA novella, Rendezvous with Destiny. For a few months now, I’ve had an idea for a pre-WWII story. I’ve had a couple of false starts, but hadn’t had much luck getting it down on paper. Finally, on Tuesday, I decided it was time to sit down and get serious about stringing words together, even though I only have the vaguest idea where it’s going.
So, without further ado, here are the first 8 sentences. I will warn you, this is a very rough first draft so please forgive any mistakes and feel free to make suggestions.

The sight of the pretty blonde girl sitting cross-legged on the hood of his battered Ford truck, a novel balanced on her ankles made David grin and jump off the porch, landing on a small pile of fallen leaves which crunched and turned to dust beneath his weight. He felt his mom’s eyes burning a metaphorical hole in the back of his neck while she watched him lope across the yard, but he didn’t care.
“Hey, Rosika,” he yelled. He lifted his arm and drew back his arm, taking just a moment to pick a target point before releasing the football he held. It arced in a perfect spiral, closing the distance between him and Rosika, missing her nose by mere inches before dropping out of sight on the far side of his truck.
David sensed, more than heard, Rosika’s irritated sigh.
“Are you ready to go?”
“I was ready to go ten minutes ago,” Rosika said, “which is the time we agreed to meet.”

Don’t forget to check out the great writers who have also decided to participate in this week’s WeWriWa and Snippet Sunday blog hop. There’s something for everyone.

This Week's Sunday Snippet and #WeWriWa Contribution

Welcome to yet another Sunday everyone. As I was posting this week's snippet, I realized I'm not very happy with this particular collection of sentences, they feel awkward and stilted, but they're what I've got.

Luke misses a rung, his boot slips and he over balances. My heart climbs into my throat as the sudden change in weight causes the ladder to rock from side to side. Acting on instinct, I quickly set the piglet on the ground and rush towards him. I reach out, grabbing the cold steel, trying to steady the ladder. His flailing elbow clips my chin, snapping my head backwards with enough force I see stars. My knees buckle and I crash to the straw covered ground just in time to cushion his fall.

If you're visiting for the first time and find yourself completely confused. I've compiled all of my DWARFED snippets into one post which can be found right here

Take some time and check out the offical Weekend Writing Warriors list. There's several very talanted writers taking part this week. In addition to the WeWriWa list there's also a FaceBook group.

Thanks so much for taking the  time to read my snippet.

EDIT- I just realized today is the start of National FFA week. Throughout high school I was a member of my school's FFA chapter and can't even begin to describe the different ways the organization worked to shape me into the person I eventually became. It's a spectacular and unique organization.   I'm delighted that not only did Dodge create a super bowl advertisement that not only honored farmers, but which was also set up in such a manner it benefits FFA.  If you haven't watched it yet, you need to. Not only is it an amazing peice, with each viewing a donation is made to a worthy cause.

2/3/13 Sunday snippet

It looks like one way or another, the tradition of posting Sunday snippets is going to hold strong. There's just some details that need to be ironed out. This week I'm sticking to the 6 sentence format, mostly because it worked nicely for this particular snippet.

Right now there's a Weekend Writer Warrior group with a linky list, and there's a 6 Sunday FaceBook group, for anyone who's interested in participating or seeing what others have written.

Anyhoo, this week's snippet, which I'm quite pleased with is from my YA manuscript, DWARFED. It picks up where last week's snippet left off. Thanks so much for stopping by and taking the time to check it out. I truly appreciate how helpful everyone has been. The comments and friendly crits I've gotten have done wonders for my writing. Thanks!

I’m going to be accountable for the piglet’s life, a responsibility I’m positively not ready for. I don’t know what I’m doing and I’m not sure how much help or advice I can expect to get from Luke or anyone else. She’s already so far behind the eight ball and everyone thinks her chances of survival are slim, and Etna’s going to be watching my every move, waiting for me to fail.

The door swings open and Luke shoulders his way into the microscopic room. He holds some sort of silver light fixture in one hand, and cradles my sleeping piglet in the other.

My heart shivers and melts.
