The picture prompt for this week's Friday Fictioneer's came from Madison Wood's blog,, where links to the other authors contributions can also be found. As someone who has always felt a strong connection to the moon, this has to be my favorite prompt to date.
Drops of dew cling to my skin as I brush the pine boughs
aside, ignoring the way the sharp needles catch at my hair, tugging at it as I
pass through the limbs and step into the clearing. Shadows dance across the
meadow, as midnight clouds chase across the sky. Casting a nervous glance over my shoulder, I
creep along the edge of the meadow, staying as close to the tree line as I can
manage, I move towards the far edge of the meadow and the freedom I hope to
find there.
Nice use of the prompt. This could be any being, any circumstance, and you captured the desperation of needing to find that freedom.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the comment on mine.
There are times where I want freedom like this. Nice job helping me to slip into the character's mind.

Thanks, I'm glad you enjoyed it.
DeleteHi Jess,
ReplyDeleteExcellent job of capturing the emotion of the scene. I want her to escape and I like that you leave a mystery of where she was.

That's exactly what I was going for. Thanks!
DeleteSuch urgency in the need to find freedom; at the same time we are gripped with a sense of the unknown and of uncertainty. Beautifully done. Mine is here: http://readinpleasure.wordpress.com/2012/05/11/fridayfictioneers-tanoas-baby/
ReplyDeleteYou're so sweet, thank you.
DeleteDear Jess,
ReplyDeleteYour story was one of the most technically perfect of this large group of submissions. The beauty of writing so well is that the piece carried me along with it like a shadow flitting through the meadow beneath the full moon.
Escape.... From what, to where? Doesn't matter in this story. We care, we're there, hoping against hope. Well done.
Aloha,
Doug

ReplyDeleteOh yeah, you and I are going to get along splendidly. =D Thanks for the follow.
DeleteExcellent post. Well-written and draws you into your character's intense desire for freedom.

Thanks for the kind review.
DeleteYou placed some subtle clues of tension in the opening lines (needles catch, tugging, clouds chase) that I only grasped (appreciated) after reading the entire piece. Well done. I'd like to see more.

I liked writing this piece well enough that I'm seriously considering trying to turn it into a serial, and see where each Friday Fictioneers prompt takes it. The big question will be whether or not I'm in the same frame of mind when next week's prompt gets posted.
DeleteThank you for stopping by and taking the time to read it. I love your sign in name.
Another poor soul trying to escape some hellish existence. Nicely written. Thanks for the nice comment on my story.
ReplyDeleteDoes she make it? Is she being pursued?
