July 14th's #WeWriWa Writing Snippet

I know I was derelict the last time I posted and didn’t respond to comments. I swear it wasn’t my fault. Balthazar’s (my beloved Toshiba laptop) space bar broke. It turns out that trying to type without a space bar isn’t easy. My back up computer has a space bar, but no internet capabilities. Bouncing between the two while copywriting was challenging enough, blog hopping proved to be more than my patience could handle. Now,  I ‘ve got a new keyboard and peace (or at least something loosely resembling it) should be restored to my computing life.

I’m still posting from my Georgian/regency era novella, Snowflakes & Beeswax. It’s a Christmassy, romantic story that takes place on a remote farm somewhere in Northern England.
Make sure you take some time and check out the other talented authors who decided to participate in this weekend’s blog hop. Links to their snippets can be found at the Weekend Writing Warrior's website and the Sunday Snippet Facebook group.

“Jack!” With a swish of chocolate colored skirt, a young woman stepped in front of Oliver. She stroked the dog’s head with a shaking hand. “Jack, quiet!”
Oliver barely heard the command over the dog’s snarls but the dog must have. The animal leaned against her leg, his mismatched eyes stayed focused on the men. Oliver drew himself up to his full height, puffed out his chest, and smoothed the wrinkles from his clothing.

  1. I can just see her stepping in front of him to protect him. Your new filly is beautiful. I saw her when I read last week's entry.

    1. Thanks. She's turned into a real love bug and the stable's main attraction. We decided to name her Mimic since she looks so much like her mom.

  2. Balthazar, I love that! My laptop is Lance :-D Glad you got a new keyboard. I got mine replaced too, because I *really needed* that delete key!

Nice snippet, just enough detail to give a clear picture. Now I'm interested to know how she responds to Oliver.

    1. I have to thank Supernatural for the name. I think I'll name my next one Cas. Life with a keyboard is certainly easier, though as soon as a couple freelancing checks post, Balthazar will be regulated to desktop computer and I'll be shopping for a new laptop.

I'm glad you liked my snippet.

  3. She obviously has a way with dogs! My kind of gal. ;-)
I've suffered with wonky keyboards too; very inconvenient. Good thing they're replaceable. Nice excerpt; especially enjoyed the "swish of chocolate coloured skirt".

  6. Glad your laptop is fixed, Jess. Seems that was going around--the laptop keyboard thing. :-)

You are writing excellent visuals! Like Deb said, the chocolate colored skirt, and I'll add that I liked Jack's mismatched eyes.

I didn't write a wewriwa post this week. Just making my rounds. Have a great week!

  7. Yeah, I still don't like Oliver . . .

I'm happy your laptop is back!

  8. I love the way you introduce her stepping in the way, the skirts and the dialogue. Makes for a great visual.

  9. Great description... You brought me right into the tension of the scene, and having just been caught in the middle of a dog & cat fight, myself, I truly felt Oliver's fear of the dog's fangs! Nice snippet!

  10. Nice to know I'm not the only one who names the important inanimate objects in my life!

A great snippet, lots of action. I could see it perfectly in my head.

  11. Computer troubles! Boy, do I feel your pain. My old computer didn't have U, J, M, or 7 keys (that functioned). My new computer doesn't have a CD/DVD drive. At the moment, my router isn't working so I have to go out for internet. Modern inconveniences, indeed!

I like a chocolate-covered skirt. It's a yummy description. :) I also like how you work animals into this story, too.
