I skipped ahead in the scene, jumping over some dialogue between Grace and Luke to get to this week's six. I like what I skipped over, but I really want to get into the heart of this particular scene, which should start next week. I'm so excited.
If you're new to this blog, you can find the six sentence snippets that lead up to this scene by looking in the May section of my sidebar and clicking on the Six Sentence Sunday snippets.
My heart beats a crazy rhythm
against my ribs as I stretch just a little bit further, and lightly scratch the
piglet behind its miniature ear. It’s tiny stub of a tail circles wildly as it
leans into my touch. “It likes me!”
Luke’s jaw tightens. “It
figures,” he mutters.
Something
about his expression as he studies my new friend causes the bottom to fall out of
my stomach.

Luke is so ambiguous, I'll never know what to expect from him, and each week you do such a great job keeping up the "man-mystery". Like your six!
ReplyDeleteThanks, I'm glad you enjoyed it.
DeleteWhat's up with Luke? Poor Grace. A nice six! :)
ReplyDeleteAw. I love baby animals. And I know that gesture, leaning into a pet. My cat, bless his soul, did that. *sniff* I miss him. Oh, yeah...six sentences. Luke's reaction is rather interesting. I'm wondering if he's jealous of the pig, or her. :) its a sweet little six.
ReplyDeleteThank you. I'm very sorry about your cat. I've had pets all my life, it's never easy when they pass from this world.
DeleteOh, definitely want to know what's bothering Luke. But love the imagery here, and the cute piglet picture!
ReplyDeleteThanks!
DeleteHuh. That's an odd reaction. I wonder what Luke's deal is.
ReplyDeleteThanks for stopping by!
DeleteI guess Luke doesn't fancy piglets. Or does he have some grudge against Grace? Like how you've used a piglet in this...your readers will love it!
ReplyDeleteIt's a little complicated, and basically comes down to Luke being practical and realistic. It will make sense after next weeks 6, I promise.
DeleteI like this. I have a question about the piglet's "tiny stub of a tail." Have their tails been docked or have they not grown long and curly yet? Been years since I've seen a piglet so I don't remember if they're born with them long or not. I like Luke's reaction. Sounds to me like he's bothered by his attraction to Grace and wishes the pigs didn't like her so that he could have something against her.
ReplyDeleteExcellent question! As much as I love the look of long curly tails on pigs, when raising them I learned that docking the tails immediately after they're born, is the most humane. Pigs, even ones raised outdoors in the fields, like to chew on each others tails, which can lead to infection.
DeleteI think this was one of the things Luke/Grace discussed in the section I skipped over.
Great 6...I love animals, too. She's my kind of character!

ReplyDeleteI'm stuck wondering what Luke's deal is, too. Is he jealous of the pig or something? ;) Very nice six!
ReplyDelete(Removed previous comment because of typo!)
All, or at least some, will be revealed next Sunday :)
DeleteUh oh. Sounds like they've been tagged for slaughter. Poor runts! Somehow, though, I just KNOW Luke won't go through with it now that Grace's heart has been won by them. Great six! LOTS of tension and emotion in so few lines.
ReplyDeleteThanks! The story is set on a working farm, and I was shooting for realism, so some of the litter will be destined for the slaughter house, but that's not the reason behind Luke's reaction. Thanks for stopping by.
DeleteLuke doesn't sound like he shares in her enthusiasm for piggies. Oh, the tension.
ReplyDeleteIt will make more sense after next week's six, I promise.
DeleteGreat six! Always love the piglet pics, too. :)
ReplyDeleteAww,the piglet is adorable! I love how you describe its reaction to her. Now, as for Luke...hmm. I can't figure out what's going on with him but you definitely have me curious to see what it's all about.
ReplyDeleteMission accomplished :) The next six, or maybe the one after that, I need to check, explains his reaction. I promise.
DeleteIntriguing six! Nice!
ReplyDeleteI have this weird pig phobia/fear, but I love the picture of the piglet! I have a sinking suspicion that cute little piglet is going to end up as breakfast one day. :(
ReplyDeleteAww, I'm sorry pigs frighten you. A couple of my friends have the same phobia, and one of those was a die hard farm girl I went to school with.
DeleteYour description of the piglet brings him to vividly to life. And what the heck is going on with Luke? Can't wait to find out.
ReplyDeleteThanks, I don't even want to think about how much time I spent working on that description.
DeleteGreat six! A man with a worrying expression when he looks at something as cute as a piglet is definitely a man to tread carefully around, I reckon.
ReplyDeleteThank you! He's about to have an open mouth, insert foot moment.
DeleteOMG, this is totally gonna be a Charlotte's Web situation, and you're gonna make me cry, right? No!
ReplyDeleteMaybe a little tiny bit like CW (Charlotte is the only spider I've ever liked)through this scene, but it won't stay that way for long. I don't think you'll cry, DWARFED is a happy book. Thanks for taking the time to stop by and read my snippet :)
DeleteThis is such a sweet story. And baby pigs are *squee* cute. Why do I get the feeling he's going to talk about bacon? ;-)
ReplyDeleteI'm glad you've been enjoying it.
DeleteThat piglet is bacon now! Can't wait to see next week's
ReplyDeleteuh oh! lol... Love it, Jess! You sure do keep us guessing :-) Farm life is tough for farm kids. It is tough to get attached to animals. The end of the line is never good for them.
ReplyDeleteNice six! :-)
It's certainly a different kind of life.
DeleteGreat six, especially Luke's reaction. Love the piglet!
ReplyDeleteThanks Paula.
ReplyDeleteI have my own supposition about Luke's reaction, but I'll wait for next week to see if I'm right before I say anything. I promise to be honest about my guess! :-)
ReplyDeleteJealous of a piggie? Aww that's sad.
ReplyDeleteCute six! I'm curious about his jealousy. Can't wait to see what you've got planned for next week! :)
ReplyDeleteThanks!
DeleteOooh, is that a positive or negative remark from him? Intriguing six, Jess. :)
