Okay, now onto my snippet. Like usual it comes from the same YA manuscript, DWARFED, which I usually post from. It picks up where last week's dropped off. If you're new to my snippets and want to learn some more, I've compiled my snippets right here. For those of you who asked, the pigs pictured in last week's post were (are?) Fengjing pigs, who hail from the same region as Shar-pei dogs.
“You keep spreading the straw,” he says. “I’m going
to go get some heat lamps.”
My thoughts wander as I continue
shaking out one section after another until the floor disappears under a
generous layer of straw. I would never admit it to anyone else, but I couldn’t
help wondering what I’d just gotten myself into. Didn’t I already have enough
things to worry about, wasn’t I already feeling emotionally drained, so what
made me think that I was in anyway shape or form, capable of taking on the
responsibility of a small pig. For all intents and purposes, I'm going to be
a parent.
I do plan to continue to posting snippets. As of right now my plan is to post as part of the Weekend Writing Warriors blog hop, and there's whispers of another 6Sunday here. It will be interesting to see what the future holds.
Seems to me that "Dwarfed" could be a great allegory.
ReplyDeleteNice writing, Jess.
Stay in touch.

Thanks :)
DeleteHi Jess; Nice to meet you. This looks like an interesting story. Looking forward to the first WeWriWa post. Cheers!
ReplyDeleteIt's going to be fun. Right now my plan is to post WeWriWa snippets on Sat. and than post something for 6SS as well. Hopefully that will motivate me to edit some of my other manuscripts.
DeleteI have really enjoyed your story, Jess. As the above said, stay in touch.

Ditto that :)
DeleteSo candid! Excellent, Jess. And I have to tell you, even though I grew up on a working farm, I know more about pigs now after reading the Dwarfed SSS posts, than I did all of my life before. Nice job!
ReplyDeleteThanks for the mention! See you next week. :-)
Glad to increase your knowledge base. Hopefully I haven't deviated too much from reality.
DeleteHey Jess! Those piggies are SO cute!! I think this is just the 'medicine' that Grace needs, especially since she's so apprehensive about it. So nice seeing her character arc. Great six! I'm thrilled I met you, so glad you and I stumbled upon each other via SSS. Still lovin' this story.
ReplyDeleteI'm glad you still like it. Meeting you through this blog hop has been great. I'm super excited to find out things look like they're going to continue in some form or another.
DeleteSix Sunday may be ending, but we're not going anywhere. Who else will answer my questions about Roundup?
ReplyDeleteHere's to the lady who got me interested in a story about pigs. <3
I'd forgotten about that :D I've had the best time connecting with you. And, even though it's not something I usually read, I loved the Vengeance of Mrs. Claus. You're very clever.
Deleteawwww, this is Great! That last sentence totally nails the whole thing, and kudos to Grace for realizing what a major thing she's just taken on. She's just the sort of person who will make an excellent pet parent! I've had you bookmarked for months so you'll be seeing me every week.
ReplyDeleteYes, the admins of SSS are responsible for much wonderfulness. I've read so many excerpts that were gripping, bunches of fun, or hot-n-heavy :D It's allowed me to just enjoy words instead of nitpicking them!
And thank you so much for mentioning WeWriWa. That's very sweet of you.
Thanks:) I do have occasional moments of sweetness.
DeleteI think it's a good thing she's realizing what an undertaking the piglet is going to be - I always enjoy the down to earth realism in your snippets. Glad your planning to keep posting Sunday excerpts! Best wishes!
ReplyDeleteMy goal is to portray agriculture, or at least hog farms, in a realistic light. Most of my happiest memories growing up were often connected to pigs. The people who raised them professionally were nice, helpful, and humble.
DeleteAww, I hope she knows how busy she'll be lol Nice six!
ReplyDeleteI'm sure she'll cope beautifully! I'm going to miss your little pigs!
ReplyDeleteI think they're going to be around for awhile ;)
DeleteVery cute picture! Raising an animal really is like parenthood, even if the child has fur, feathers, or scales.
ReplyDeleteThat's the truth!
DeleteShe's gonna be a great parent, I'm sure. Enjoyed reading your snippets. You really know a thing or two about pigs. Hope we'll stay connected somehow. All the best with everything!
ReplyDeleteThanks Frank! I have the same hope.
DeleteLove the introspection here, and enjoyed riding along with you on SSS!
ReplyDeleteSame back to you. Thanks for all your support over the past few months.
DeleteI love her realization of the responsibility she's taking on. Thanks for sharing this book with all of us. All the best to you in whatever the future holds.
ReplyDeleteThanks and same to you. The next few weeks should be interesting.
DeleteGood luck with this story. Great six!
ReplyDeleteThat's exactly what she'll be. Good six and good luck with your writing in 2013, Jess. :)
ReplyDeleteLove her internal doubts and the realisation of what she's taken on.
ReplyDeleteLook forward to 'meeting' you again at the Writing Warriors!
Thanks Paula. I'm foreseeing a great deal of blogging and writing in my future. I'm looking forward to it.
DeleteAnd that's the same reaction parents have, too. Fabulous six! I look forward to reading more in the future. Keep in touch! :)
ReplyDeleteThat's what I was shooting for. Thanks, and I plan to!
DeleteI love her internal doubts about her responsibility. Great Six!
ReplyDeleteThanks Karen :)
DeleteShe's taken on a job, all right.
ReplyDeletePersonally, I think teenage pregnancy would be greatly reduced if all kids had to raise a bottle baby. I've done it several times and it's a lot of work. Fun, yes. A bonding experience, yes. But also exhausting, especially when you know there's a good chance you'll get your heartbroke if things don't work out.
DeleteI wish there was a LIKE button somewhere I could click for emphasis. :)
Delete"You become responsible, forever, for what you have tamed." That's a quote from one of my favorite books, The Little Prince. I think you capture the overwhelming feeling that comes before accepting said responsibility so well, it actually hurts me thinking back to that moment..
I just wanted to say that it has been a pleasure meeting you here on the circuit, I hope to see you on WeWriWa - and I would bet all my money that you'll have an amazing career in writing. :)
It's been so nice getting to know you my dear! I wish you all the best :D
ReplyDeleteLove the emotion here, and I know it's not the end of Sunday snippets! I'll definitely be seeing you on one of the sequel sites, Jess.
ReplyDeleteLove this! Her uneasiness is really vivid!
ReplyDeleteAmy Durham
Great internal dialogue, Jess! Hope to keep "seeing" you around!
ReplyDeleteHer doubts are very real. Well done.
ReplyDeleteBe careful of your tense. It switches in this snippet.
I've signed up at both WeWriWa and 6SS, so you haven't seen the last of me.
Lovely excerpt!
ReplyDeleteAw, what a great snippet! Funny how sometimes taking on "one more thing" is just the thing to make it everything else fall into place. I've enjoyed your sixes, Jess, and look forward to seeing you around on the 'net! :)
ReplyDeleteThank you :)
DeleteAnother wonderful snippet, and a great show of maturity on her part.
ReplyDeleteReality strikes!
ReplyDeleteLovely.
